To prevent grinding marks, which create ridges, the conformity between the race and rolling elements in the bearing must have a smooth surface finish. On a flat surface the balls used in the bearings have lower load capacity than the rollers. For higher load capacity circular grooves are used then the ball bears on the bottom to ensure side play.
